1960
Exiled from South Africa
After speaking out against apartheid, Miriam Makeba was exiled from her homeland. Her passport was revoked, forcing her to live in the United States. Despite this personal loss, her voice became a powerful weapon in the fight against oppression.

1963
Addressed the United Nations
Miriam Makeba made history as the first African woman to address the United Nations. She gave a passionate speech, condemning apartheid and calling on the global community to act. This solidified her role as a global activist for human rights.

1965
"Pata Pata" Shines Worldwide
Her hit song"Pata Pata"was released, lighting up charts across the world. This infectious dance track introduced millions to African music while showcasing her talent and cultural pride.

1976
A Voice for Africa’s Youth
Following the Soweto uprising, Miriam dedicated her music to raising awareness of the struggles young South Africans faced under apartheid. Her song"Soweto Blues,"written by her former husband Hugh Masekela, became an anthem for resistance.

1987
Joined Paul Simon’s Graceland Tour
Makeba became part of the revolutionaryGracelandtour, collaborating with Paul Simon and other South African musicians. The tour highlighted South Africa’s cultural brilliance and underscored the urgency to end apartheid.

1992
Apartheid Ends, Hope is Restored
The fall of apartheid began, and Nelson Mandela was released from prison. These events set the stage for Miriam Makeba’s long-awaited return to her beloved homeland.

2001
Honored by the African Union
The African Union recognized Miriam Makeba as one of Africa’s greatest cultural ambassadors. Her lifelong dedication to activism and music was celebrated on a continental scale.
